Kosher & Halal-certified

Crushed Tonic’s marine collagen is sourced from a blend of sustainably harvested non-gmo tilapia and pangasi fish raised in freshwater fish farms in Europe, with final processing in a Kosher facility. The stocks of wild fish in our oceans and fresh water sources have become so overfished, that sourcing from sustainable, clean farms is an environmentally friendly move that preserves our wild stocks.

Marine collagen is considered by many to be a higher quality source of collagen. It dissolves easily and is almost flavorless (no gamey flavor or weird clumps like bovine collagen). It goes through a unique process, known as hydrolysis, that breaks collagen compounds down with water and enzymes into small and short chains of amino acids for improved assimilation. This collagen also goes through a safe sterilization, pasteurization, filtration, UF, and demineralization process.

It has also been tested for mercury and metals and contains 0 metals (upon scrutiny, there was less than 0.01 parts per million).

Marine collagen is considered a superior source of collagen for many reasons. It comes from a cleaner source, the skin and scales of fish, raised in open bodies of water, while bovine collagen comes from cow hides raised on feedlots. Many times the conditions in which cows are raised are not ideal and can be down right dirty. Feedlots are famous for their contaminated living conditions which results in polluted feed and cows being heavily treated with antibiotics which can result in slaughterhouse diseases. Yuck. It’s also heavier on the environment too.

Marine collagen is considered to be a superior source of collagen because it’s the most bioavailable of all the collagen types. What does that mean? Marine sourced collagen has the advantage over animal sources because it has a lower molecular weight which translates into greater absorption and efficacy (which is one of the many reasons why it carries a higher price tag). It also has the advantage of having a neutral taste, whereas bovine collagen carries a gamey flavor which can be tough to choke down.

Even bovine collagen that comes from grass-fed sources has a dubious environmental impact. Many forests have been cleared to raise grass-fed cows in South America and beyond. Economically, it's simply a much cheaper source of collagen, it’s not as bioavailable to the human body, carries a heavier environmental impact and is simply an inferior source.

Marine collagen is considered a premium source of collagen peptides. Why? Science is showing it's more bioavailable to the human body because of it's lower meleccular weight (it has a smaller particle size), which make it more absorbable and has greater efficacy in the human body. Collagen that comes from bovine (cow) or porcine (pig) sources is less than half the price and carries a higher molecular weight, which makes it not as bioavailable to the human body.

Because the world is facing ever increasing challenges when it comes to finding environmentally friendly sources of collagen due to climate change and ever changing dietary and lifestyle choices of humans, there is a need for alternative sources of collagen.

Though more expensive, marine collagen is considered by many to be an environmentally sustainable source of collagen, as the majority of it comes from discarded fish waste or skin that is rich in Type I collagen. The same holds true for bovine collagen production. However, when you compare the environmental impact of the two, marine collagen comes out on top. Marine collagen produces far less greenhouse gas emission than bovine.

Tilapia is a preferred and sustainable choice. Tilapia have a very low requirement for fish in their diets and primarily feed on algae and plankton (Marine Conservation Society.)

The stocks of wild fish in our oceans and freshwater sources have become so overfished that sourcing from sustainable, clean farms is an environmentally friendly move that preserves our wild stocks.

Collagen is a complex protein made up of long-chain amino acids that makes up the mechanical properties, structure and function of cartilage, tendons and epidermis.
Right behind water, collagen is the most abundant building block in the human body. And the largest structural protein. By the age of 25 it starts to break down due to natural aging and UV light. It shows up as the loss of elasticity and reduced cell turnover.

Marine collagen contains 19 out of the 20 amino acids our bodies use on a daily basis in particular our skin and hair rely upon.

Why collagen powder and not protein powder? Collagen powder contains specific amino acids that are great for rebuilding and synthesizing collagen. This includes the amino acids that are essential for your skin including, hydroxyproline (which is almost only found in collagen), arginine, histidine, methionine, lysine, proline, leucine and glycine. Collagen derived from Pangasius and Tilapia fish contain more of the amino acids, proline, glycine, and hydroxyproline.

Q: Do the different types of collagen matter?
A: Fish collagen is primarily composed of collagen types I & III.

The benefits of Type I and Type III collagen include supporting healthy hair, nails, skin, hydration, and joint and bone strength.

The collagen types don't matter as much as people think, as they all contain the amino acids we need to build a strong body. When you consume specific collagen types, it does not target specific parts of the body, for example your nails. The collagen is broken down into amino acids that can be absorbed by your body and supports the whole body.

We feel the most important component of collagen is its bioavailability. Hence, how absorbable is it by the human body? Studies are showing that marine collagen is absorbed easier than bovine (cow) or porcine (pig) sources, because it has a lower molecular weight, or smaller particle size (Khan et al., 2009). This translates into improved efficacy as well.

Q: Does your collagen contain shellfish?
A: It is shellfish free. It contains the skin and scales of fish.

Q: Do you have collagen in capsule form?
A: No we do not
